University of Arkansas American Society of Civil Engineers

The University of Arkansas American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) student chapter provides students the opportunity for students to interact with other students, university faculty, and with civil engineering professionals. They do this through monthly meetings with professional presentations, faculty interactions with competition projects, and fall and spring cookouts. The chapter does service projects both on and off campus by coordinating food drives, collecting clothes for those less fortunate, and planting trees at the Woolsey Wet Prairie. Each year students are sent to local, state, regional, and national conferences, including the Annual Arkansas ASCE Section workshop, the Workshop for Student Chapter Leaders, and the NWA Day of Training, hosted by the Northwest Arkansas ASCE branch.

The ASCE gives students the chance to apply everything they have learned in the classroom to real-life situations through competition. They do this by building things such as a 21 foot long steel bridge capable of holding 3,000 pounds or concrete canoe. Each item that the students create is carefully graded with the difference between first place and second place sometimes coming down to a few grams. Many competitions also have writing prompts in addition to the construction element. They must present these papers in front of the judges and their peers, further developing their public speaking skills.

These conferences and competitions help the students build their skills and create contacts in the concrete world. They get to interact with students and teachers from other schools. They make connections with possible future employers. They get to practice their skills and learn from their mistakes. The University of Arkansas American Society of Civil Engineers student Chapter would like your support, so that current and future students can experience the same opportunities as those before them.

U of A Student Chapter goes to the 2015 National Spring Convention

The University of Arkansas student chapter was once again named an Excellent University Chapter at the 2015 Spring Convention of ACI.  They also donated concrete artwork to the Women in ACI silent action that raises funds for young professionals to attend the convention.

Work was completed on two bowling balls made for local Arkansas companies bid on through a silent auction at the ARMCA spring convention.  The students also had numerous handmade items on display at the convention.  The Students appreciate all of the support that the concrete community gives them to attend the ACI conventions.
